Music

  • Do you accept play lists?

There is a music search facility which enables you to search through my music collection.

If you decide to make a booking with me you would then receive a username and password which would enable you to access the client area of the website and you can then create your own request list. You would be able to add tracks and save it at any point up until 3 days before your actual event.

The entire database comprises of over 50,000 tracks/videos.

As long as I'm given at least 3 days notice I can ensure that ANY song listed on the database is with me for your event. You are of course welcome to supply your own CD(s) for any real rarities or for situations where one of the couple is from another country and you would like some of that countries traditional music played

When searching through this huge collection to create the request list, previously some clients became very excited at the huge choice available and drew up very lengthy request lists of over 70 songs! It is virtually impossible for a DJ to play such a request list and also makes it very restrictive for me on the night and less able to react to what is happening on the dancefloor if I have to constantly keep looking at a list.

When you enter the client area you will be able to access various planning forms, one of which is named "Requests":

Under the "Classification"  you can add any track you search for to one of 5 classifications.

    Play If Possible
    Must Play
    Dedication
    Do Not Play
    Play Only If Requested

Please add songs that are very very special to you, to the "Must Play" list.
The "Play If Possible" list is to give me an idea of the types of music you like.
The "Dedication" is for if you want me to announce that the song is for someone in particular.
"Do Not Play" is for any tracks or styles of music you particularly dislike.*
"Play Only If Requested" means I will not play this track unless one of your guests requests it.

The maximum number of tracks that can be saved is 35 entries because, there are only so many songs that can be played in one night! Remember that for a 4-hour event, the maximum amount of songs that could be played is under 60! (Average of 4 minutes per song played back to back), and that's without taking into consideration guest requests on the night.

The database is updated two or three times a year, meaning that it is unlikely to show any current chart hits. I always have the most current chart hits, so even if a song you like doesn't show up when you search for it, it doesn't necessarily mean that I won't have it. If there is a song that you want played please let me know by emailing/calling me to ask whether I have the track in question. Additionally, some very well known tracks do not display on the database due to a very strange glitch in the system! This should be restified soon.

I try to guarantee that I will play ALL songs in your "Must Play" list. (time permitting)

(I cannot accept responsibility for any tracks in this list that clear the dancefloor!)

If your event over-runs (which is extremely common) then it may not be possible to fit all tracks on the "Must Play" list in.

*If there are styles/genres of music you particularly dislike then just choose one track from that style/genre and then in the comments section, state that you do not want any tracks of that genre played.

The best events are usually those where the bride and groom provide a framework for the music they would like rather than a rigid list of what should be played.

One last thing to consider that is very important. Sometimes tracks are included on the Must Play list that result in a lot of people leaving the dancefloor (or even clearing the dancefloor!). This can then lead to a real dilemma for me; I can continue ensuring that I play all of the Must Play tracks even though not many guests are dancing too them, or I can ignore the tracks that my instincts tell me aren't going to get many people dancing and instead play tracks that are more likely to result in more people dancing.

But the choice is yours; often the client will say to me beforehand to not play anything on the list that I feel may not work, but unless I have been told this, it is your night, and I will endeavour to play all your Must Play tracks even if I'm pretty sure that it will result in many people not dancing; it should be borne in mind though that this can really dampen an atmosphere, and the vast majority of the guests will blame me for playing music that is clearing the floor, and in some situations this even greatly annoys some guests.

  • Cheesy Music

It is your event, so I'll play the music that you want. All I ask is that you give a guideline of the types of music you would like to hear, as opposed to a set play list for 4 hours, as these are usually much too rigid and invariably make for a very boring night for the guests. A good DJ constantly watches the guests that are on the dance floor and also those around the room.

I certainly do not conform to the Peter Kay stereotype; using lightboxes/lightscreens, ropelights and playing music such as Jive Bunny, Agadoo and the Birdie Song all night. Some clients do want some cheese and others want none at all. The main thing that I always seek to establish is your definition of cheese! What one person considers a great party song another person considers to be cheese/corny.

For example many people love YMCA & The Bee Gees and ask for them to be played, while many other people consider them awful and do not want this type of music at all. So you need to let me know your views, and it is worth bearing in mind the tastes of your guests.

  • Do you have a demo tape/CD?

I have never produced them because I feel they do not accurately reflect the quality of your DJ. Anyone can record a load of songs onto a CD but it does not indicate how they would react to a dancefloor emptying. A good DJ constantly watches the audience and their reactions to each song he plays, this dictates what to play next, this is impossible to replicate on a CD. Additionally, the music that you put onto the CD can turn prospective clients off; if for example the DJ put a lot of newer stuff on and the prospective client was looking for slightly older music, or vice-versa, or if you put lots of different styles of music onto a CD it may well not "flow" very well together.

  • Guest Requests?

When you confirm a booking you will be sent a username/password that gives you access to the client area of this website. One section in here is the Guest request system, which gives you  a link and a password (seperate password from your client password) that you can send to your guests to enable them to make some music requests

They can browse the music library, select requests, and include special notes about the requests that they make. You will be notified whenever a guest logs on and makes a request. After navigating to the link they will need to log on using the date of your event and the supplied password.

You will be notified each time they make a request and you are able to turn these notifications off if you wish.

You can also remove any tracks selected that you would rather not hear.

Further to this on the night I always announce on the microphone that guests are welcome to ask me for any requests they would like to hear, unless you request that this not be announced.

  • Very loud music?

I am very aware that at most of the events I'm booked for, are social functions where people wish to dance and have a good time, but also chat with old friends and make new friends. This is very difficult to do if the entertainment is intent on forcing you to shout all night because the music is too loud. Throughout the event I pay special attention to the volume levels to ensure that the music is loud enough to dance to, but not so loud that you're not able to have a conversation. If at any stage during the event you feel that the volume is too loud please do not hesitate to ask for it to be lowered.
If you do require background music during the meal, if at all possible, it can be a good idea not to place any elderly relatives/friends very close to where the speakers will be located, otherwise it will result in the music being played at a much lower than usual volume level, which can often result in the rest of the room not being able to hear the music at all.

  • Background music

This again is easily arranged. Just choose the style of music you would prefer to have played during the meal and/or drinks reception and also for the period before the ceremony starts. The most popular choices are the easy listening/rat-pack style sounds. Other popular choices are jazz, acid-jazz & smooth soul. Usually various Classical pieces for the lead up to the Ceremony.

You will also be able to use my microphone/sound system for the speeches.
